Public invited to Graven Award events |
Adrian Miller, executive director of the Colorado Council of Churches and award-winning author, will receive Wartburg’s annual Graven Award on Tuesday, March 26, at 11:30 a.m. in Wartburg Chapel. The public is also welcome to attend a reception and book-signing from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Monday, March 25, in Hagemann Castle Room, followed by "A Conversation with Adrian Miller" at 7 p.m. in Wartburg Chapel. The Graven Award is presented annually to a person whose life is nurtured and guided by a strong sense of Christian calling and who is making a significant contribution to community, church, and society. It is named for the late Judge Henry N. and Helen Graven, natives of Greene, whose lives reflected those same commitments. |

Wind Ensemble events to benefit Japan tour |
The Wind Ensemble will hold two events to raise funds for its May Term tour to Japan. Bouzard retirement reception |

SAFE will be hosting a candlelight vigil Thursday, March 21, at 8 p.m. in the Wartburg Chapel. Come hear students share their stories of how mental health has impacted their lives, followed by a short candlelight vigil in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to suicide. Performance appraisal forms available |
Performance appraisal forms for 2018-19 are finalized and now available on the InfoCenter under Employment > Forms and Procedures > Performance Appraisal Forms. As usual, performance appraisals are to be completed beginning April 1 and submitted no later than June 30, generally covering the working period of June 1, 2018, through May 31, 2019. In an effort to complete the appraisals in a timely fashion, please note that all late and/or incomplete performance appraisals will result in a counseling session with the supervisor responsible and Human Resources. Documentation of the counseling session will be placed in the supervisor's personnel file and communicated with the appropriate cabinet member and/or supervisor. The following are the requirements of a complete performance appraisal: | • | Performance appraisal must be complete and submitted on the most updated performance appraisal form. (Outdated performance appraisal forms will NOT be accepted). | | • | Signatures AND dates of both the supervisor and employee must be present. | | • | Appraisals (and self-appraisal, if completed) must be submitted on or before June 30, 2019. | We appreciate your cooperation. MCSP Seminar: Math attitudes |
Sabah Munir will speak on math attitudes at the MCSP Seminar on Tuesday, March 19, 11:30 a.m. in SC 134. This presentation will discuss the prevalence of math attitudes and math anxiety and their implications in the everyday world. Findings from two studies will be described to help gain a better understanding of these math attitudes and anxiety among secondary and post-secondary students. Snacks will be provided. |

2019-20 German Institute funding opportunity |
The Executive Committee of the German Institute announces the call for applications to support activities/endeavors related to German and/or Germany. For 2019-20, a total of $6,000 is available from external sources. An application is required and funds will be awarded on a competitive basis. Applications for the full amount of available funds will at this time most likely not be supported in full. Applications are due March 29, 2019. Awards will be announced no later than April 15, 2019. In the past, the Institute has funded enrichments to May Term trips to Germany, the German film festival, learning materials for the faculty/staff heritage tour, and subsidized student travel to Germany for study abroad and internships (but not May Terms). Congratulations and thank you to Dr. Nicki Toliver, Dr. Jacob Tews, and the Wartburg Castle Singers and Kammerstreicher who spent their Winter Break serving the college on their 2019 Regional Concert Tour. Combined, these ambassador ensembles performed for over 1,500 alumni, students, family, and friends throughout the Midwest. Kathleen joins the college from the University of Northern Iowa, where she served in the Office of International Programs since 2016. This year's annual Lynes Lecture will be held Sunday, March 24, at 2 p.m. in WBC 214. Kenneth Lyftogt will present "Iowa: Free Child of the Missouri Compromise," taken from the title of his latest book. The subject matter will address the questions of the significance of the Missouri Compromise to the nation, particularly to Iowa, and why the repeal of the Missouri Compromise led directly to the Civil War. |

Offices closed during Wednesday Chapel time during Lent |
The Christian church year season of Lent sets aside the six weeks prior to the Easter celebration of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, as a time to press “pause” and return to questions about God’s purposes and our own. During the Wednesdays of Lent, college administrative offices, as well as the Den and the Konditorei, will close during Wednesday Weekday chapel time, 10:15-10:35 a.m. (The W, Zesty Orange, Security Office, Information Desk, and Mensa will remain open). This provides time for faculty, staff, and students to participate in the Lenten chapels or take a break from meetings, lessons, and daily work. Please note that food ordered through GET will be available as soon as the stores open, including board plan meal transfers. Lent began March 6 and continues until Easter in April. |

Have an interest in service learning or looking to enhance service learning in a course? Join the Engaged Faculty Institute and receive in-depth information surrounding components and practices of quality community engagement. You will work directly with community partners to co-create courses and/or research projects using the Campus Compact curriculum. A $250 stipend is offered to faculty and their community partners who get involved. Shame is the lie that tells us we aren't good enough, that we aren't lovable, and that we will always fail. This workshop is designed to help students identify where shame is affecting their lives. It will provide ways to identify shame, to stop letting shame control their life, and how to move forward helping others be free from the effects of shame. The Wartburg community extends its condolences to the family, friends, and former colleagues of Nancy Josephine Anderson, 82, who died Sunday, March 3, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly. She was a professor of physical education at Wartburg College from 1958 to 1991. Celebration of life services will be held at a later date. |
Dr. Kyle Schenkewitz has been awarded the Dr. Peggy & Kendall Pruisner Early Career Scholarly and Creative Activities Award. This award is an annual recognition of outstanding faculty or faculty/student scholarship at Wartburg College. The award and their associated presentations provide a venue in which to showcase excellence in scholarly activity and/or creative activity by a member of the Wartburg College faculty. Dr. Schenkewitz will present “Encountering the ‘Saracen’ Other: Anastasios of Sinai and the Arab Conquest” March 29, 4:30 p.m. in the McCoy Rooms as part of the college's Philosophical and Literary Society series. Three Wartburg College professors were granted tenure and promotion during the college’s Board of Regents meeting in February: Dr. Allan Bernard, a professor of business administration; Dr. Michael Bechtel, a professor of science education; and Dr. Matthew Zart, a professor of chemistry. In September, their rank will be promoted to associate professor. In addition, the board also approved emeritus status for three faculty members who will be retiring this spring: Dr. Thomas Boerigter, professor of Spanish; Dr. Walter “Chip” Bouzard, professor of religion; and Dr. Bill Withers, professor of journalism and communication. Barbara Fedeler, professor of art, is one of eight upper-midwestern artists chosen to participate in Selects 2019 at the Sioux City Art Center. Selects 2019 is on display March 23–June 23, with a preview reception March 22, 5-7 p.m. The Artist Experience on Saturday, March 22, 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., includes artist presentations and panel discussions. The Sioux City Art Center Selects 2019 exhibition is supported by funding from the Iowa Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Sioux City Art Center. |

2019-20 Undergraduate Research Funding Deadlines: | • | 2019-2020 R.J. McElroy Student/Faculty research fund | Application/Deadline: Email shawn.ellerbroek@wartburg.edu for an application and cover page. The cover page and proposal (as a word document) are due Monday, March 18, to Sally Malcolm in the office of V.P. for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty. Proposals will be reviewed by a panel of faculty members, and up to four proposals will be forwarded to the McElroy/Iowa College Foundation for consideration. Eligibility: One or more students of junior or senior year standing from any department. Applications require dual authorship by the proposing student or teams of students (two or more) and a sponsoring faculty member. Research in credit courses is not eligible. If awarded, funds will become available after June 1, 2019. Qualifying activity: The research fund will cover any expenses necessary to support activities defined in a credible research proposal (supplies, travel, student stipends). Maximum award is $2,000. Applicants awarded a 2019-20 McElroy research grant remain eligible to receive a Wartburg 2019 Student Summer Research Fellowship (as outlined below). |

The Wartburg women's basketball team won its Sweet 16 NCAA DIII tournament game vs. UW-Oshkosh, and lost in the Elite Eight game against St. Thomas over the weekend in St. Paul, Minnesota, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. The team finishes the season 27-4. |
The Wartburg wrestling team finished in sixth place and crowned four All-Americans over the weekend at the Division III NCAA wrestling championships in Roanoke, Virginia, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. Wrestlers who earned All-American honors are Cross Cannone, Brady Fritz, Kyle Briggs, and Bowen Wileman. |
The Wartburg men's and women's indoor track and field teams finished with five individual and one relay All-American performances at the NCAA Division III Indoor track and field championships that concluded Saturday in Boston, as reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. The following became All-Americans: Carina Collet, 5,000m (new school record); Dalton Martin, 800m; Cassidy Christopher, 3,000m; Sam Pinkowski, 5,000m; Anna Rehberg, shot put; and Belle Tyynismaa, Carson McSorely, Lily Campbell and Jackie Ganshirt, 4x400m relay. |
